Erick served in the Army National Guard for 16 years, and was diagnosed with PTSD upon his return. After learning of a program called Canines For Warriors, which provides service dogs to veterans suffering from PTSD, Erick was given a dog named Gumbo who was trained to help prevent the onset of a panic attack. During a TV interview, Erick started struggling for words while describing his experience and Gumbo immediately reacted.
